We planned to send a group of Nimblers to the 2010 ASAE Technology Conference. Unfortunately, Snowpocalypse had different plans for us and every other attendee, forcing ASAE to cancel the event.
What does a group of displaced technologists do when their annual conference is canceled? They take the conference virtual - as UnTech10.
For the past two days, my fellow conference refugee Nimblers and I have been "attending" UnTech10, running a virtual booth, demos and webinars via GoToWebinar, following the topics trends on Twitter, and participating in conversations on the conference web site.
I felt like a live test subject in a social media experiment throughout the event, and I have to say that the experience was very engaging and exciting. When I wasn't "running the booth", I found myself scouring the ever-updating #untech10 Twitter hash and the un-conference web site for valuable news and information to pass along to others.
I also got to meet, demo to and chat with some great people at our virtual booth on topics ranging from Google Apps to Salesforce.com to content management to technology planning for associations.
Above all, I think UnTech 10 demonstrated how a group of like-minded people can come together using all the social networking tools at our disposal today. We as a company are looking at this model for running our own events in the future.
